Our empirically dominated culture places all focus on the external and physical world, blinding the importance of the internal and mental.

Self-mastery is being in control of the internal thought processes that guide your emotions, habits, and behaviors.

It’s the ability to respond rather than react. The former is done with intention and awareness, the latter is visceral and without reason

Self-mastery comes through self-examination and self- determination. Self-mastery will help you control all your negative habits and it is the most difficult job you will ever do. As they say it, “if you do not conquer self, you will be conquered by self.”

Think of self-mastery as the channel through which your whole energy must flow towards achieving your dreams. The secret to mastering self discipline is to send out specific quantities of energy and focus exactly where needed, without squandering your power. You will learn to channel your emotions, as they are the driving force that puts your decisions into action.

Instill Commitment

The definition of the word commit is “to devote oneself unreservedly.” This means holding absolutely nothing back; giving all you’ve got to achieve your life purpose. It means being willing to do whatever it takes for as long as it takes. No excuses, no ifs, no buts, no maybes and failure is not an option.

Self mastery always leads to excellence. It is always a choice and has nothing to do with talent, personality or luck.

Self mastery always leads to excellence. It is always a choice and has nothing to do with talent, personality or luck. Just as quality is never an accident, but the result of high intention, guided effort and smart execution. To attain a high level of self-discipline and excellence always pay attention to details. You know what they say, ‘going the extra mile is never crowded”.

Seek continual improvement and always strive to do better. To improve yourself, you must change something you do every single day. Nevertheless, maintain high personal standards. Remember, your level of performance is a personal choice.

Get Inspired By Others

Sometimes there will be things working against you and hoping that they will go away isn’t going to help. Start sharing your dreams with people around you. This will make them more real for you and will make you more accountable. Who knows, maybe you will inspire others to do the same.

You must take a hard look at where you’re standing and be ready to overcome the obstacles. Also, you need to consider the costs associated to your journey. These costs may include time, energy, finances, choices, sacrifices, or all of them. This is another good time to decide how bad you want it.

If you need to get inspired by how someone else did it, find your drive and strategies in other people’s stories. We have all been fired up and excited every time we came across a success story of someone who’s made it to the top.

But contrary to what many people believe, success is not having what everybody else has. Instead, it is about getting from where you are right now to where you want to be. Simply put it, it’s achieving your dreams, whatever they are.

Be Your Word

Here is a very inspiring statement by opera singer Beverly Sills: “there are no shortcuts to anyplace worth going.” What it means is that you cannot indulge yourself in pursuing immediate pleasures and make any real progress in your personal journey to success. You always have to choose between short-term or long-term benefits.
